I found out a lot about the historic Strand Theater the other day in Seymour, Connecticut. It dates back to World War I, and the memories created here while folks were sitting back watching “talkies” or a stage production well it’s always been the talk of this town. Kids dated here at the movies and then married, there are quite a few stories like that, and oh Sophie Tucker once placed the Strand in the Vaudeville Days.
Here’s one you’ll love, there is a copy of a newspaper article on this post which says they used to have “china” nights here. If you showed up for a show you got a piece of china and by the end of the year you had a whole set of dishes. Wouldn’t it be fun if they brought that back here and at other movie houses. It’s the way things used to be done in the country way back, and in this economy that could help folks out again. I think it could be a fun way to go for the gals who showed up for maybe a ladies night out event. Might be a good way to keep things thriving at the Strand, everybody loves giveaways.
Over the years the theater has fallen into disrepair and then loved again, like most theaters around the country, and it’s being loved again with its board of directors and by the town. There’s a new red curtain on the stage and school kids are coming here to learn about drama and such. There’s also a brand new marquee on the place.
I’m a lover of historic buildings in the state of Connecticut and think we should do what we can to save them, if we don’t we remove a lot of history.
Sort through the photos below that the folks over at the theater put together for me, there’s a lot of great information there, oh and go see a movie there when you get a chance, I think you’ll find the price of popcorn and candy a real bargain….and the Shops nearby at Seymour, if you haven’t seen them yet, get a move on, you’ll have a lot of fun there on a day trip.
